Children’s Bible Story: “The Good Shepherd and His Sheep”

The Story of the Good Shepherd

In the Bible, Jesus told a wonderful story to help us understand how much He loves us and cares for us. This story is found in the Book of John, Chapter 10. Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11).


A good shepherd takes great care of his sheep. He knows each one by name and watches over them day and night. He leads them to green pastures where they can eat and to still waters where they can drink. The shepherd protects them from danger, like wolves or other wild animals.


Jesus is like this good shepherd. He knows each of us by name, and He loves us more than we can imagine. He guides us, protects us, and wants us to be safe and happy. Isn’t that amazing?


Why We Are Like Sheep

You might wonder, why does Jesus compare us to sheep? Well, just like sheep need a shepherd to guide and protect them, we need Jesus to lead us and keep us safe. Sometimes, sheep can get lost if they wander away from the shepherd. But a good shepherd always goes out to find his lost sheep, just like Jesus always comes looking for us when we feel lost or scared.


In Luke 15:4-7, Jesus tells another story: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” This story shows us how much Jesus loves each one of us. No matter how far we go, Jesus is always there to bring us back to Him.


The Shepherd’s Voice

Did you know that sheep can recognize their shepherd’s voice? They trust him and follow wherever he goes. Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). This means that as we learn more about Jesus through reading the Bible, praying, and singing songs, we start to recognize His voice in our hearts.


This is why it’s so important to spend time with Jesus every day. Just like reading a good story from your favorite Christian children’s books, getting to know Jesus is a wonderful adventure!


How to Be a Good Sheep

Being a good sheep means listening to Jesus and following His teachings. How can we do that? Here are a few fun ideas:

1. Read Bible Stories: Make a habit of reading Bible stories for children with your family. Stories like “The Good Shepherd” help us understand who Jesus is and how much He loves us.

2. Pray Together: Talk to Jesus every day. Share your thoughts, worries, and joys with Him. He’s always listening!

3. Sing Songs About Jesus: Singing is a joyful way to learn more about Jesus and His love. Whether it’s during family devotionals or at church, lift your voice and sing!

4. Attend Church: Going to church and joining in on engaging kids in church activities can help you learn more about Jesus while having fun with other kids.

5. Share Jesus with Friends: Don’t keep this amazing love to yourself! Tell your friends about Jesus and how He is the Good Shepherd. This is a great way to practice a simple Gospel presentation for kids.


Memory Verse:

Let’s remember what Jesus, our Good Shepherd, says in John 10:14: “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” Try to memorize this verse and think about how Jesus always takes care of you!


Fun Activity: Draw the Good Shepherd

Here’s a fun idea! Grab some paper and crayons and draw a picture of Jesus as the Good Shepherd with His sheep. You can even draw yourself as one of the sheep! This is a great way to remember how much Jesus loves you and is always watching over you.
