Elijah and the Prophets of Baal – God Answers Prayers!

 Bible Passage: 1 Kings 18:16-39

Memory Verse: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” – Jeremiah 33:3 (NIV)

The Story Begins

A long time ago, the land of Israel had a wicked king named Ahab. He and his wife, Queen Jezebel, worshipped false gods and led the people away from the true God. They encouraged the people to pray to Baal, a fake god who could not see, hear, or help them.

But God had a prophet named Elijah who loved Him and wanted to bring the people back to the truth. One day, Elijah boldly challenged King Ahab and the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel.

The Great Challenge

Elijah stood before the people and said,

“How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” – 1 Kings 18:21

Then Elijah proposed a test:

The 450 prophets of Baal would set up an altar and place a sacrifice on it, but they wouldn’t light the fire. Instead, they would pray to Baal and ask him to send fire from the sky.

Elijah would do the same and pray to the one true God.

Whichever god answered by sending fire would prove to be the real God!

Baal’s Prophets Fail

The prophets of Baal started praying. They cried out, “O Baal, answer us!” from morning till noon. They danced, shouted, and even cut themselves to get Baal’s attention. But nothing happened—no fire, no sound, no answer!

Elijah laughed and teased them, “Maybe your god is sleeping! Maybe he is too busy!”

God Shows His Power

Then, it was Elijah’s turn. He built an altar with twelve stones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. He dug a trench around the altar and asked the people to pour water all over the sacrifice—three times! The altar was soaking wet, making it impossible for fire to start naturally.

Then Elijah prayed,

“Lord, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant.”

Immediately, fire fell from heaven! It burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the water in the trench.

The people fell on their faces and cried out, “The Lord - He is God! The Lord - He is God!”

I hope the Elijah and the Baal Prophets has opened your eyes to always trust God even more.

Share this post with all your loved ones today to reassure them of God’s love.
