As a new school term begins, there’s no better time to remind our children about the power of kindness. The story of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) is one of the most beloved Bible stories for children because it teaches an important lesson: God wants us to love and help others, no matter who they are.
In Jesus’ parable, a man was traveling when he was attacked by robbers and left hurt on the road. Two people - a priest and a Levite - saw him but walked away. Then came a Samaritan, someone the injured man might not have expected help from. Yet the Samaritan stopped, cared for his wounds, and made sure he was safe. Jesus told this story to show that Christian values for children include showing compassion, even to those who may be different from us.
As kids return to school, they will meet classmates with different backgrounds, personalities, and abilities. Encourage them to be like the Good Samaritan: be the friend who helps someone pick up dropped books, include the new student at lunch, or stand up for someone being left out. Teaching kids that raising godly children means living out their faith daily helps them see that small acts of love reflect God’s heart.
Parents can use this story as part of family devotional ideas to discuss kindness around the dinner table or during bedtime. Ask questions like, “How can we be Good Samaritans in our classroom or playground this week?” Use this as a children’s ministry resource to reinforce that helping others is an act of worship.
Let’s remind our children that kindness isn’t just a one-time act - it’s a lifestyle. Just as the Good Samaritan showed love, our little ones can carry God’s light wherever they go, making their schools and communities brighter places.
